Letterhead saying, “R. A. Long Historical Society - His Amazing Legacy Lives On”

Greetings, and Welcome to Our Web Site.

There has always been interest in the Long family legacy as evidenced by the use for the Kansas City Museum of the Long mansion residence (Corinthian Hall) in Kansas City, Missouri.  That interest has recently increased to provide a greater depth of focus on all aspects of the life and times of Robert Alexander Long and his family, resulting in the formation of the R. A. Long Historical Society.  You are cordially invited to become a charter member of this new organization to provide financial support and/or personal volunteer involvement in its activities.

Incorporated as a 501c3, we seek “to preserve the legacy of R. A. Long and his family through projects which educate with integrity and truth.”

As that mission statement suggests, our focus encompasses Mr. Long, his family, and their overall legacy nationwide.  The Longs left their mark from Europe to the Pacific Northwest.  Their lumber company was once the largest on earth, yet they were stewards who pioneered in reforestation.  They were builders of grand homes and planned cities.  They were friends of statesmen and generals, but they never lost their common touch.  They were intensely competitive at work and play, but they were equally compassionate.

As you probably know already, there’s a lot to admire in their heritage – and through this organization, we hope more people will come to know it, too.

There’s one other thing you should know about the R. A. Long Historical Society, because the question is bound to come up: Our organization does not compete with, or seek to supplant the Friends of Corinthian Hall.  Their recent election was a referendum on the question of whether to broaden the Friends’ focus beyond the Longs’ Kansas City home, and as the results made clear, the majority preferred to stick with the Friends’ traditional focus.  That was the members’ prerogative, and I continue to wish them well in pursuit of that mission.  It is my sincere hope that our efforts will complement theirs.

So please join us in this exciting new organization to honor the Longs and remember their story.  You’ll find all the information on the membership application linked below.

Sincerely,

Tim Sullivan
President of R. A. Long Historical Society
